About Merkato's Zelzel Tibs

Zelzel Tibs (also known as Zilzil Tibs) takes its name from the long, ribbon-like strips of beef that distinguish it from other tibs dishes. At Merkato, quality beef is cut into tender strips, marinated, and sautéed over high heat with onion, tomato, green pepper, garlic, and a blend of traditional Ethiopian spices, locking in juiciness and flavour.

Served sizzling on a generous bed of injera flatbread, Merkato's Zelzel Tibs can be prepared mild or spicy to suit your taste. Hearty, aromatic, and deeply satisfying, it has been a go-to choice for Winnipeg's meat lovers for over two decades — perfect on its own or shared as part of a combination platter.

"Merkato is my favourite restaurant in Winnipeg. Everything, from the decor and music, to the food, to the proprietress, perfectly emulates the style of a typical Ethiopian cafe. Never crowded, you won't be rushed as you select from an incredible variety of dishes. Serving sizes are large despite the inexpensive prices."

"We were served by the friendly owner of the restaurant, and he suggested the mixed platter, which had seven different dishes (three meat and four vegetable based). Eating Ethiopian style — no utensils, just hands aided by the spongy flatbread — was a fun and unique experience. The total bill was only $50 Cdn all in, so it certainly was good value."
